ABOUT US

Guimarães was European Capital of Culture in 2012!, historic center was classified as World Cultural Heritage by Unesco in 2001!, International Guitar Festival is a member of the first European Platform in the guitar sector co-funded by European Union

The beggining

This festival was born in the year 2014 within the century-old Institution “Sociedade Musical de Guimarães”. It was idealized and founded by the Portuguese guitarist Nuno Cachada. It aims to reinforce the classical guitar strand in the musical scene, both in the pedagogical and formative context aiming to foster a new attitude to classical guitar, still little publicized as a soloist instrument.

Several world-renowned guitarists, pedagogues and researchers such as Costas Cotsiolis, Dejan Ivanović, Michalis Kontaxakis, Judicaël Perroy, Hubert Käppel, Ricardo Barceló, Mak Grgić, Robert Trent and others,  participated in this festival.

International Recognition

Figg has, at the expense of its diversified program and in line with the cultural values of the European Union, taken its place in the international guitar industry. We are proud to be part of the first European guitar platform that brings together 17 international classical guitar festivals – EUROSTRINGS

This platform creates a hub of international opportunities for emerging guitar players from Europe and beyond, educational and training programs that foster their professional development, supporting the trends for sustainability of festivals in the field of classical music.

Guimarães, the first city in Portugal

Guimarães, land of the first King and symbol of Portuguese identity, stands out for its internationally recognized cultural positioning, which led to the classification of its historic center as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2001 and later to be awarded the title of European Capital of Culture in 2012.

Venues

Guimarães has a high level of cultural infrastructures. Auditoriums of cultural spaces such as  “Centro Cultural Vila Flor” or  “Plataforma das Artes e Criatividade”, or even historical monuments with excellent acoustic conditions for this instrument, such as the “Paço dos Duques de Bragança”, “Convento de Santo António dos Capuchos”, among others,

WE ARE PROUD TO BE A MEMBER OF EUROSTRINGS

THE FIRST PLATFORM IN THE GUITAR SECTOR IN EUROPE!

What people say about us?

Guimarães International Guitar Festival is one of the most complete events in the Portuguese guitar scene.
The combination of concerts, competitions, conferences and other activities included in the program of the festival is a valuable experience for all participants and an important contribution in the pedagogical training of the students. All these factors allied to the beauty of the city of Guimarães and its riches make FIGG an unforgettable event.

It's a privilege to be connected with FIGG Festival since its beginning and to follow what an incredible evolution it has made! I would especially mention your enormous enthusiasm and the willingness for giving your best for every edition of Your Festival, together with the open and constructive attitude towards learning and gaining the experience in such a difficult and complex task like an organization of a genuine multidimensional event. Congratulations!!! All I can say is THANK YOU for everything, but particularly for making an event of excellency for Guitar in Portugal! May it long live! All the best!

Guimarães International Guitar Festival is an amazing event for all guitar enthusiasts. As a guitar teacher I believe it’s a very important event for the motivation for all guitar students as they have the chance to meet and work with famous guitar players worldwide participating in the masterclasses and be part of the audience in concerts and conferences of high quality level among other activities. Also a very nice environment for all the musicians during the days of the festival. As a guitar performer I would like to say thank you very much for all the hard work making possible this event. Since the first edition of FIGG the event is getting better, growing not only in number and quality of the competitors but also with very important performers and teachers. Is currently a reference event for the guitar universe in Portugal and Europe. I hope it lasts for many years!
